CNN investigation reveals thousands of doses of Evusheld are unused on pharmacy shelves whilst blood cancer patients are still dying of COVID19

Soon after the US Food and Drug Administration gave the green light to Evusheld, a new drug to prevent Covid-19, pharmacist Tom Henry alerted his blog readers. He was thrilled because finally, there was a drug that could protect people like him who are immune-compromised and had a weak response, or no response at all, to their vaccinations. “Exciting news — FDA grants emergency use authorization [to Evusheld],” Henry wrote in a post published December 18. A few weeks later, a reader wrote back that she’d been able to find the drug. “Congratulations on getting this medication,” Henry responded. “I know it is in short supply.” But Henry, a retired Air Force lieutenant colonel and a pharmacist with multiple advanced degrees, was unable to find Evusheld. He contracted the virus and diedfrom complications of Covid-19 on February 9.

We are grateful to CNN for highlighting the sad story of one of our loved writers and community members here, Tom Henry. In his death, as in his life, Tom seeks to educate fellow patients. Evusheld is available in the USA, you have to work hard to find it, but it is available. There is a database you can use to try and track down doses near you and arrange to obtain this life saving infection BEFORE you catch COVID19. Not every blood cancer patient will succumb to COVID19, but it is hard to predict who will. So whether before or after infection we encourage all our readers to ensure they get access to all the treatments available. It really shouldn’t be so hard.
