Convalescent plasma improves survival in blood cancer patients with COVID-19

We learnt recently of data that shows a man made and hence purer and stronger antibody cocktail can save lives in patients who do not make antibodies if infected with this dreadful virus.

One of the main groups that are most likely not to make antibodies to COVID-19 infections or vaccinations are blood cancer patients. So no surprise then that in a new publication in an oncology journel the raw form of donated plasma also saved lives in this group. Surely this data is yet more information to support the idea there the more antibodies we make to COVID after a vaccine the safer we likely are. This picture ought not to be surprising from what we know about the immune systems.

The data, collected as part of a national registry, indicate that patients who received convalescent plasma from donors who had recovered from COVID-19 had a death rate of 13.3% compared with 24.8% for those who did not receive it.

The difference was especially striking among severely ill patients admitted to intensive care units (ICUs). Such patients treated with convalescent plasma had a death rate of 15.8% compared with 46.9% for those who didn’t receive the treatment.
